Uber and Bus Accident

Posted by Jeremy Rosenthal | Jun 05, 2020 | 0 Comments

An Uber vehicle was struck by a bus in New York, with the driver and two passengers inside. On May 19, 2020, an MTA bus in Brooklyn ran off the road and onto the sidewalk, injuring 4 people. According to the news report, the driver lost control of the bus after suffering a medical episode.

The bus crash occurred around 6:20 p.m., during evening rush hour. The B12 bus went up over the sidewalk, hitting a lamp post, some small trees, a street sign, two parked cars, and an Uber vehicle with 2 passengers. In total, four people were injured, including a pedestrian.

According to one witness, “the bus was traveling outside a high rate of speed swerving in and out of both lanes. There was a man lying under the street pole. He wasn't moving, paramedics picked up him first and they hauled him out of here.”

Uber Drivers Blocking Bus Lanes

There is a conflict between buses and Uber drivers in some parts of the country. In Chicago, Uber, Lyft, and delivery drivers illegally used the city's bus lanes to pick up and drop off passengers. This not only blocks the buses but it may also increase the risk of an accident when an Uber vehicle stops in an active bus lane.

Chicago introduced an ordinance that allows parking enforcement aides to photograph vehicles blocking bus lanes and mailing the drivers a ticket. This would be a way to enforce the traffic laws even if the Uber vehicle drives away before parking enforcement arrives to write a ticket.

What Happens to Uber Passengers After an Accident?

An injury in an Uber crash can be difficult for passengers because they may not know who was responsible for the accident. An Uber crash can be caused by the driver, driver of another vehicle, or some other cause like a defective car part.

The first step after an accident as an Uber passenger is to get medical treatment. Even if it does not seem like there were any serious injuries, you should consider seeing a doctor if there is any chance of an injury. Some injuries, like neck, head, or back injuries, may not show up immediately. It may take a couple of days before the injury victim notices pain, difficulty moving, or numbness. Delayed diagnosis can make the injury worse.

Reporting the Accident to Uber

According to Uber, they want passengers to report an accident on the app. Uber's insurance policy is supposed to cover passengers who were injured in an accident while using the app. Under Colorado's rideshare laws, during the time you are a passenger, the insurance coverage is the amount of one million dollars ($1,000,000) per accident.
