Teenager Injured in Lyft Accident Hit and Run

Posted by Jeremy Rosenthal | Sep 02, 2020 | 0 Comments

Isaiah Benloss, an 18-year-old college student in Brooklyn, was taking a Lyft back home after spending time at a friend's house. When the Lyft was just a  few miles from his home, an Audi crashed into the Lyft ride, injuring both the 34-year-old driver and Benloss. Both were hospitalized in critical condition.

Mother Urged Ride Because Walking Was Dangerous

Isaiah's mother, Jajayra Espada, was the one who told her son to take the ridesharing options. “I tell him there's so much danger because of all these shootings. I tell him I don't think it's safe to walk or take the subway,” she said in an article with Bklyner.

The police are investigating the case as a hit and run. The accident occurred around 3:40 am. The other vehicle involved was an Audi with New Jersey plates, heading eastbound on Beverly Road in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. The 3 occupants of the vehicle fled on foot.

Lyft Passenger Fighting for His Life

The victim's mother was asking for those who were involved in the crash to come forward, take responsibility, and admit they made a mistake. Benloss suffered multiple fractures and had to undergo emergency brain surgery. He had to be placed in a medically induced coma. His family is waiting for him to wake up.

Benloss is an avid basketball fan, played varsity basketball in high school, attended the College of Staten Island, and wants to be a professional basketball player after college or a basketball coach. As a part-time job, Benloss worked in Patient Relations at the hospital, screening people coming in and out of the building for COVID-19/coronavirus symptoms.

Costs of a Brain or Spinal Cord Injury in a Rideshare Accident

Both drivers and passengers can be victims in Lyft accidents. When a Lyft vehicle is hit by another driver while transporting a passenger, the highest level of Lyft insurance coverage is supposed to kick in, covering 3rd party liability for up to $1 million. Unfortunately, when multiple people are injured in a Lyft accident, $1 million may not be enough to cover all the damages.

In serious car accidents that result in brain injury, paralysis, or other permanent injury, the injury victims may require lifelong care. $1 million in coverage may seem like a lot but it may not provide for 30 years of caring for a teenager who suffers a permanent injury.

Damages in a personal injury claim are supposed to cover all losses caused by the accident. This includes medical bills, continuing care, loss of income, loss of earning potential, and pain and suffering.

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, the average cost for a person with paraplegia is $550,000 for the first year and more than $72,000 for each additional year. The estimated lifetime cost of a person with paraplegia who is injured at age 25 is more than $2.4 million.
