Columbine and Columbine Valley Lyft and Uber Rideshare Accidents

Columbine is a nice, quiet community next to Littleton. Just southwest of Denver, Columbine is close enough to be convenient for commuters but far enough away to feel suburban, with lots of parks, good schools, and safe for kids and families. Like most suburbs in Colorado, having a car is important to be able to get to work, school, go shopping, or go out for fun.

Not everyone has a car and many people want to take a break from driving sometimes. Hardcore cyclists brave the streets in all types of weather but commuting by bike can be difficult for many, especially in the rain and snow. There is limited public transit available for many people in Colorado. For Columbine commuters, many end up driving to the Littleton/Mineral Park-N-Ride Station, to take the RTD into downtown.

The other option for Columbine residents is to take a taxi, Uber, or Lyft. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft provide a convenient alternative to driving. However, if you are involved in an injury accident as a Lyft passenger, the claims process to pay for your medical bills may not be very straightforward. If you need help after an accident, talk to an experienced car accident attorney to help you deal with the insurance company and rideshare company.

Reporting a Car Accident in Columbine

If you are involved in a car accident, you must report the accident to the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Under Colorado state law, accidents have to be reported immediately to the agency with jurisdiction. For most car accidents in Columbine, the responding law enforcement agency is the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Department
South Precinct
11139 Bradford Road
Littleton, CO 80127

Non-emergency phone: 720-497-7200
Emergency phone: 911

Sometimes law enforcement may not investigate a minor accident. If the police don't respond, you can report an accident online through the DMV Online Crash Reporting System. The police or sheriff's officers may only respond to accidents that involve:

  • Disabled vehicle
  • Accidents involving a fatality or serious injury
  • Driver under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Hit and run accidents

Medical Assistance After an Injury Accident

If anyone is injured in a car accident, call 9-1-1 or seek medical attention. The fire department or ambulance services may respond to a serious car accident to provide pre-hospital care and transport the injury victim to the hospital. Not Sure If You Were Injured?

It may sound surprising but a lot of people are not really sure if they suffered an injury after a car accident. There may be a lot of adrenaline pumping after a car crash and the drivers and passengers may not notice anything is wrong. Some soft tissue injuries do not start to show symptoms until hours or days later. This is common with a neck injury or back injury. Head injuries and brain injuries can also take time before the victim notices something is wrong.

Does My Insurance Cover an Uber or Lyft Accident

Insurance can be a tricky question when it comes to Uber and Lyft accidents. Colorado's Transportation Network Companies (TNC) laws require all drivers to have minimum liability insurance. However, the insurance coverage changes based on the driver's status at the time of the accident. The minimum insurance coverage in Colorado is 25/50/15, which means:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death per person in an accident;
  • $50,000 for bodily injury or death to all persons in any one accident; and
  • $15,000 for property damage in any one accident.

Off-duty: When the driver is not logged into the app or not active as an available driver, they have to rely on their own insurance.

On-duty but waiting: If the driver is logged into the app and waiting for a fare, the higher limits apply, at 50/100/25.

Active driver: If the driver has a rideshare passenger in the vehicle, or the driver is on their way to get a passenger, the highest insurance limits apply. Lyft and Uber have insurance limits of up to one million dollars ($1,000,000) per accident.

Reporting an Accident to Lyft or Uber

Lyft drivers and Uber drivers are required to report an accident. Passengers and other drivers may also be directed to contact the rideshare companies directly but you may want to talk to a lawyer first. The other driver's insurance company may try and get you to say something to deny your claim. To protect yourself, you can call an experienced vehicle accident attorney. Your lawyer can deal with the insurance company so you can focus on getting better.
